Each upgrade you purchase or blueprint you acquire then unlocks a new cog mod. This provides a constant sense of progress, and feeds into the compulsion to harvest and cash-in resources for gold. And it doesn't stop there.Įverything you use can be levelled up, too, allowing you to mine faster, shoot further and expand your backpack. It’s not long before you’re shooting sticky bombs, pounding through previously unbreakable rocks with a jackhammer, and using a hookshot to grapple your way around the mines. New abilities unlock steadily, giving Dorothy more and more versatility. But much more importantly, she’s wonderfully nimble, and even the simple act of wall jumping to quickly ascend mine shafts feels great. These puzzles and platforming gauntlets aren’t difficult, but they’re satisfying, and net you cogs and artifacts – two of the most important collectables in Dig 2.ĭig 2’s protagonist, Dorothy, doesn’t have much to work with from a story perspective. These rooms make for a nice change of pace, as you go from literally carving out your own path through a massive sprawling world to being in a confined space with very specific solutions. You’ll also come across cave entrances that take you to an impressive variety of self-contained challenges.
Dungeon layouts take devious pride in enemy positioning and cleverly hidden secrets. In contrast to its predecessor, SteamWorld Dig 2’s world is not procedurally generated, and you can feel the handcrafted quality as a result. It has the same core gameplay loop of digging for riches, but leans further into platforming, puzzle solving and RPG elements, while boasting a gorgeously detailed aesthetic.
SteamWorld Dig 2 is very much the sequel I was hoping for. It’s a glorious a tale of robot cowboys, mutant humans and mysterious technology. A steampunk Western, it sends you digging deep into the earth, searching out precious resources to sell in the dusty, one-mechanical horse town above. Upon arriving in sector 3 I was immediately thrust into a (scripted?) battle I couldn't win and was destroyed, and now I'm not relishing spending all the time flying around collecting resources just to get back to that point.In the cluttered landscape of fictional post-apocalyptic worlds, 2013’s SteamWorld Dig was a breath of fresh air. My time in the first two sections was spent mostly gathering resources, which seemed necessary but I can see getting tedious very quickly. I tried a little of Everspace and I'm not sure what to think. StS is actually the first roguelike game I've actually liked. My improvement at the game has been palpable - I used to have to rest 2-3 times in Act 1 as Silent, and now I rest once at most. The beauty of StS is that every run is winnable - there are easier runs and more difficult runs, but you can win with whatever the game throws at you as long as you're smart and strategic enough (I am not, but much better than I was), so each run becomes an interesting puzzle. I watched some instructional videos by Jorbs which changed the way I play and approach the game, and my win rate increased dramatically. You may actually like Quest better, in that case - it's pretty different.Īs far as StS, though, I initially thought like you but I've since come to realize that it was my ability - and not the randomness - that was holding me back.
